ABOUT PETE VAN OVERWALLE

Pete van Overwalle is a thought leader in talent development, change, and human adaptability who helps redefine how organizations think about readiness in an era of constant disruption. Through hundreds of client touchpoints, conversations, workshops, and engagements with leaders, teams, and organizations, Pete has discovered a pattern that too many organizations overlook: the challenge is often not a lack of strategy, vision, or ambition. The real problem is that the pace of change is moving faster than people’s capacity to absorb it, adapt to it, and perform through it.

As Founder and CEO of Omni Touchpoint and President of ATD Central Indiana Chapter, Pete is deeply committed to advancing the talent development profession and equipping L&D leaders to create more meaningful impact inside their organizations. He is especially passionate about experience-based adult learning that does more than inform. It challenges thinking, builds capability, and drives lasting change. Through his thought leadership, facilitation, and strategic guidance, Pete is helping talent development leaders better understand the Adaptability Gap and the critical role they can play in closing it.

Closing the Adaptability Gap:
Talent Development’s Strategic Role
in Helping Organizations Keep Pace with Change

PETE VAN OVERWALLE | Founder, OMNI TOUCHPOINT

Organizations today are asking more of their people than ever before. New technologies, shifting priorities, talent pressures, evolving leadership expectations, and continuous transformation are accelerating the pace of change across nearly every function. Yet many organizations overlook one critical issue: the distance between what the business now requires and the current capacity of people to adapt effectively.

This is the Adaptability Gap.

When strategic change outpaces human readiness, the consequences begin to show up in ways that talent development professionals know all too well: stalled adoption, inconsistent execution, learner overload, change fatigue, uncertainty, and difficulty translating learning into sustained performance. In this environment, learning and development leaders have an opportunity to do more than provide training. They can play a strategic role in helping organizations close the gap between ambition and readiness.

This session builds on the broader conversation around adaptability by introducing a more advanced and organizationally focused lens. Rather than centering only on adaptability as an individual meta-skill, participants will explore the Adaptability Gap as a systemic challenge with direct implications for reskilling, upskilling, leadership development, employee growth, and organizational performance.

Through a practical framework, guided reflection, and application-oriented discussion, attendees will learn how to recognize signals of the Adaptability Gap in their own organizations and consider how talent development can become a stronger enabler of readiness, resilience, and lasting change.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  • Analyze the Adaptability Gap and its significance for organizations facing accelerating change, rising expectations, and increasing pressure to reskill and upskill talent.
  • Evaluate signals of the Adaptability Gap across leaders, teams, and organizational systems to determine their impact on readiness, learning transfer, and performance.
  • Apply practical talent development strategies to help close the Adaptability Gap and strengthen leadership, workforce readiness, and lasting organizational change.
